Overview
Our team recently completed a major project at Redhill Roundabout in Nottingham, supporting Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) and Via East Midlands. The works formed part of a wider operation involving several divisions to allow for essential rock-face safety inspections. Due to the unique location and scale of the site, meticulous planning and multi-agency coordination were vital to the project’s success.
Project Requirements
The steep cliff face bordering the roundabout required a full inspection to assess its condition and ensure it continued to meet health and safety standards. To facilitate this, our role was to:
• Remove a large mature oak tree growing directly from the rock face
• Clear dense vegetation along the affected section
• Provide safe access for rock-face inspectors to carry out their assessments
Planning & Collaboration
This operation required collaboration between multiple departments, including:
• Ecologists – to ensure the works complied with environmental and wildlife regulations
• Gully clearance teams – who utilised the planned road closure to carry out their own essential works
• Highways teams – to assist with traffic management and overall coordination
Because Redhill Roundabout is one of Nottingham’s busiest routes, the works were scheduled overnight, between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., to minimise disruption to commuters.
Execution
A team of six skilled operatives attended site, utilising our fully owned, in-house equipment which included:
• Two woodchippers
• Two mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) for high-access operations
Our experienced arborists removed the oak tree with precision and safely cleared the surrounding vegetation, ensuring a clear and accessible area for the inspection teams.
Outcome
The works were completed:
• On time
• Without incident
• Within the scheduled night closures
The road reopened as planned each morning, with no impact on daytime traffic.
Working in Partnership
It was a pleasure, as always, to work alongside the Highways division, NCC, and Via East Midlands. This project showcased effective teamwork across multiple sectors, all working together to maintain safety standards and keep the county moving.
