Hedge Reduction
Where a hedge has been left uncut for several seasons and has grown significantly beyond its intended size, a straightforward trim is often not sufficient. Hedge reduction involves cutting back into the older, woodier growth to bring the hedge back to a manageable height and width.
This is more involved work than routine trimming and requires an understanding of how different species respond to hard cutting. Some species, including beech, hornbeam, yew and most native hedging plants, respond well to hard reduction and will regenerate vigorously from old wood.
Others, most notably Leyland cypress and other fast growing conifers, will not regenerate from bare brown wood and need to be managed carefully to avoid permanent damage.
We assess the species and condition of the hedge before recommending the extent of any reduction, and we will tell you honestly if a hedge has been left too long for a straightforward recovery.
Hedge Species We Work With

Leylandii and Conifer Hedges
Fast growing and popular for screening and privacy, Leyland Cypress requires at least one cut per year, and often two, to keep it at a manageable size. It should be trimmed before it reaches its desired height and spread, as cutting back into bare wood will leave permanent brown patches.
Privet
One of the most common hedging plants in domestic gardens across Nottinghamshire. Fast growing and responsive, Privet typically needs trimming two to three times during the growing season to keep it dense and tidy.
Laurel
A vigorous evergreen that can take over quickly if left unmanaged. Laurel is best cut with secateurs or a saw rather than a hedge trimmer to avoid leaving large, shredded leaves on the surface, and benefits from cutting back once or twice a year.

Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Field Maple, Hazel and other native species are best cut on a rotation to maximise their value for wildlife while keeping them at a workable size.
Hedge Removal
Where a hedge has died, become severely diseased or is no longer wanted, we can remove it completely. This includes cutting back and clearing the above ground material as well as dealing with the root system where required.
